I follow many photographers’ websites and blogs. Many of these photographers write a blog post at the end of the year that encapsulates their year from a photography standpoint. I thought I would reflect on my year in photography and also start a new tradition of selecting my top 5 photos from this past year.

This year, I made the leap to become a photographer. I say that kinda “tongue in cheek” because I don’t know that you necessarily make the conscious decision to become photographer. I did purchase a professional-grade camera body (Nikon D700) and a few quality lenses. In addition to the camera gear, I purchased a canvas backdrop, numerous props, etc. Then, I put myself out there and performed as many photo shoots as I could. I stretched my boundaries and did a variety of shoots for high school seniors, toddlers, family portraits, engagement photos, etc. All along the way, I created and improved my website and my Facebook fan page.

With that said, I feel like I will look back on 2011 as the foundation to my photography. I feel like I made strides in all facets from improving technically in the specifics of shooting photographs to learning about business basics. Deep down, I planned on building this foundation in 2011. I see this next year as an opportunity to build on this foundation and to refine my abilities. My wish list would include improving technically with an emphasis on lighting. I would love to purchase some more lighting equipment and learn more in that area. I would also enjoy attending a Nikon workshop in the coming year. Most importantly, I want to branch out even more and offer more shoots to a wider audience.

I don’t necessarily have photography goals. I don’t exactly know where photography will take me. I do try to follow a few objectives. If I can continue learning, improving, and having fun, then the other things will take care of themselves.

I also wanted to share my top 5 photos from 2011. I had fun performing this exercise! If I collected my favorite photographs, I must admit that my current collection would be black and white. I enjoy the depth and drama of a black and white portrait! So, I chose the following photographs (see below) as my favorites this year. In looking at them, I wonder about the favorites to come in 2012. I hope you enjoy them! Let me know your thoughts and ideas.
